So b = 10000 ft^4.

Unlike MathCAD you have to type a single quote (') before typing the units.
a:=10'ft
For the second b= go to the end of the line and type ' and enter ft^4

Using ' before typing unit is a new information for me. Thanks. Defining a unit can be faster.
Usually I just type with the unit what I want, then select from the unit selection under the cursor. For example I just type MPa then select unit MPa. Never use ' before.

You can actually define units either way. With or without the need for single quote. I like the single quote to be consistent with other units and so it appears in the units style of display.
