There's no reason to prevent people from downloading them. They should be free for all.

IMHO, Protected means not available to Smath Community.
No need for password .

Protected downloads were made to share extensions to a limited number of people, for whatever reason the author of such extension he thinked was better to restrict the access (f.e. a worksheet might contains data subject to privacy rules or Not Disclosure Agreements). However this was causing continuous requests for knowing the passwords so nowadays creating password protected extensions is no more available, but those already created are still there for legacy purposes; I think the idea wasn't bad, it probably needs only that a password protected extension should be hidden to everyone unless you have an invitation code (as well as the password, of course).

TL;DR: Unless the author of the single extension shares explicitely the password with the community we can't access it; if you are strongly interested you can always try to contact him to ask if he want to share the password privately with you.
